Atlantic Ocean Fishing Report
Capt. Jim Brincefield

After waiting 4 days ashore waiting for an opportunity to fish the offshore wrecks, we finally found a small weather window and “made a run for it”…

We had a fair sea condition opportunity for most of the morning but it would not last long. This was our 3rd extreme long range deep drop wreck fishing trip of the 2007 campaign. We were joined by 6 intrepid anglers, along with local all stars Mr. Glen Caldwell and Capt. Darren Foster. Other anglers – “Ralph”, “Earl”, and “The Car Salesman” were also aboard, much to the delight of Capt. Croakerhead! We fished only one super secret wreck and whacked our limit of 175 keeper corpulent Black Sea Bass with alacrity. It was an excellent bite with all aboard catching at least one VA Weight Citation per angler (some had multiples) and their limit of 25 BSB’s a piece. It was so good we only had ONE Dog Sharks (released) and ZERO Bluefish. MAN, WHAT A bite!!! We scurried in as quickly as possible with our tails between our legs thankful for our good luck. We almost made it without incident, but as we approached Cape Henry – here came the BIG BLOW! We made it in safely but were happy to be at the mouth of the Bay when that blow came! With all of this wind it’s probably going to be a while before we can make it out again…

Everyone aboard had at least one VA Weight Citation BSB:

Mr. Richard Hensley, USMC – Ret., VA Beach, VA – 6 pounds 3 oz’s
Mr. Glen Caldwell, VA Beach, VA – 5 pounds 8 oz’s
Mr. Gordon Walker, Jr., Richmond, VA – 5 pounds 2 oz’s
Capt. Darren Foster, Chief – USN, Newport News, VA – 5 pounds 1 oz
Mr. Donald Johnson, Richmond, VA – 5 pounds even
Mr. Chad Fetter of Pensiltocky did not want a citation

Here’s our bastion of slob Rockfish totaling just under 121 pounds for the top 3 of these 4 that earned the Jil Carrie fishing team a $20,000.00 payday in the 2007 VA Beach Mid Atlantic Rockfish Shootout. Pictured (from left to right) are: Mr. JT Reiber of NOVA, Capt. Mark Wray of VA Beach, VA, Mr. Bill “F’n Crabber” Merkle of Shady Side, MD, and Capt. Steve “The Professor” Wray of VA Beach, VA. Yours truly, Capt. Croakerhead is pictured in the rear of these miscreants (on the cell phone) accepting congratulations and victory offerings from Ms. Paris Hilton.

It was Al Pacino stars in a Sidney Lumet 1975 thriller masterpiece – “Dog Day Afternoon” (I know I’m dating myself). Today we got out into the deep Atlantic Ocean with a fair sea condition opportunity. This is our 2nd extreme long range deep drop wreck fishing trip of the 2007 campaign. We were joined by 11 intrepid anglers, Capt. Mark “The Tilefish Slayer” Wray, and 1st Mate T.J. Reiber. We fished four wrecks and 5 Blueline Tilefish spots. It was a fair bite as we landed 227 keeper corpulent Black Sea Bass (not counting a multitude of landed half BSB’s which were so rudely bitten off by Dog Sharks and Bluefish), 77 small and medium Blueline Tilefish, and 73 slim Runner Bluefish. We also released a ton of Dawg Sharks. We had a final tally of 3 VA Weight Citation BSB’s:

Mr. Kenneth L. Garthe (“Party On Garth”) of VA Beach – 5 pounds 4 oz’s
Mr. G. Wade Tyler of Glen Allen, VA – 5 pounds 2 oz’s
Capt. Mark Wray of VA Beach, VA – 5 pounds even

Atlantic Ocean Fishing Report

Well, after 7 days of excruciatingly painful waiting for a favorable sea condition opportunity, we finally got out to the great beyond of The Atlantic Ocean for our 1st extreme long range deep drop wreck fishing trip of the 2007 campaign. We were joined by 9 intrepid anglers, Capt. Steve “The Professor” Wray (a/k/a “The Black Sea Bass Slayer”), and 1st Mate T.J. Reiber. We fished two wrecks in cold, choppy Atlantic Ocean seas. It was a decent bite as we landed 169 keeper corpulent Black Sea Bass (not counting a multitude of landed half BSB’s which were so rudely bitten off by Dog Sharks and Bluefish), 3 medium Blueline Tilefish, and 19 slim Runner Bluefish. We also released a few Dog Sharks and a few Cunners. The fishing was greatly assisted by a few chummers (much to the delight of The Captain). We had a final tally of 8 VA Weight Citation BSB’s verified and several others which were likely eligible which weren’t weighed either because the anglers did not want Citations or because they were multiples. The average size of the BSB’s was superior. Our next deep drop trip will be Wednesday, January 24 (weather permitting).

VA Weight Citations:

Capt. Steve “The Professor” Wray of VA Beach, VA – 5 pounds 14 ounces

Mr. Clyde Goins of Hampton, VA – 5 pounds 12 ounces

Mr. Steven L. Czarny of Chesapeake, VA – 5 pounds 8 ounces

Mr. Dennis Walczak of VA Beach, VA – 5 pounds 2 ounces
